EVALUATION: REVIEW

Having reviewed my three pieces I have decided to change my production company to BBC THREE. Having researched into BBC 3 and the likes of Cherry Healy, I have decided this is more suitable for my short film.
This because they are appealing to a younger audience, containing of aspirers and discoverers.

Having watched programmes such as this :

http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b01r20qc/

http://www.open.edu/openlearn/body-mind/childhood-youth/childhood-and-youth-studies/childhood/studying-twins-studying-personality

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01r20qc/Child_of_Our_Time_Series_10_Changing_Families/

I have decided that my short film needs:

  • A quicker pace
  • A Narration
  • More location shots
Also having watched this clip on Youtube, I have decided my titles should be like this, to make my short film more conventional.

Audience Feedback Questionnaire

I created a questionnaire on google docs so I could undertake some more audience feedback.

PLANNING: REVIEW FLATPLAN

PLANNING: MAGAZINE REVIEW

Sight and sound is the magazine that I am going to create a review for.

Research into sight & sound magazine:
  • Sight & Sound is the international film magazine that offers a unique insight into the very best of film culture.
  • Sight & Sound was first published in 1932 and in 1934 management of the magazine was handed to the nascent BFI, which still publishes the magazine today.
  • It publishes its magazines monthly.
  • website- www.bfi.org.uk/sightandsound/

I read some of the reviews to understand the register they have adopted, so I could apply this register to my review.

One review I looked at contained a large photo and 3 coloumns of text.

Their layout was very structured. This review contained little images and again 3 coloumns of text.
I have created a flat plan of my review.

PRODUCTION: FINALISED POSTER & FEEDBACK

So far this is my finished poster, there may be a few last minute slight changes.

PRODUCTION: CREATING A NEW TITLE

This is the text I have also created on photoshop, to try the other poster style.

The ideology behind the whole poster is that "less is more". By not giving away the plot it leaves more to the imagination.

PRODUCTION:POSTER FOCUS GROUP FEEDBACK

I then came across this poster, which I think is more interesting and meets the posters in the middle. The complete title is out of images.

So I created my title in all of the images.

PRODUCTION: THE POSTER

I aim to keep a theme throughout my pieces, so I decided to create a title on Photoshop that I would use in all 3 of my products.
I also decided that I would create a few posters and let my focus group decide. I created a Black and White collage out of my photos. I am purposely trying to keep to a theme by using the same colour scheme.
Creating the poster process:

I will ask my focus group which one they prefer. I still am going to edit the text a little bit however the layout is the decision needed to be made.
These are the two posters I have come up with:

I need to create the text at the bottom (containing the production company etc) of the posters to make them more conventional/ professional.

PRODUCTION: CREATING THE TITLE

I need to create a title to establish a theme and use in my other products aswell.
These are the photos I took when filming, I began by turning all of my photos into black and white on iphoto ( as this theme is running throughout) to make it look professional.

On photoshop, I chose a thick bold title which I am happy to use throughout all of my products. As I want to keep a theme/look throughout them.

On a new page, I created a collage of the photos I wanted to use.

This is the collage created out of some of the photos I took.

I then created my title ON PHOTOSHOP.

PLANNING: FILM POSTER FLATPLAN

PLANNING/RESEARCH: FILM POSTER

AIM:
I will show awareness of variety of fonts and size, the choice of title/masthead font could have some sort of impact,  accurate language and register; image and text is integrated, photos manipulated appropriately; material is appropriate to the task set. I will create both products on Photoshop.

1. PLANNING The Poster
Conventions of a Poster:
1. To be eye-catching/captivating
2. To have a focal picture that will be intriguing.
3. To display a large title that is easily read "TWINS"
4.  Suggestion of the film genre.
5.  May use famous actors to promote the film ( mine will have the twins as the actors )
6.  Will attract a target audience.
7.  A tagline is usually evident on the poster.
8.  Age certification usually displayed.
9.  Coming soon or release date displayed.
10.  Directors and Production Company displayed.
I plan to keep the poster within the same theme as the short film and the magazine front cover. I want it to promote the short film and give them an urge to watch it. Something that is ascetically pleasing.

This Poster isn't of a film, however the use of the black and white images really appeals to me. I am using various sets of twins so I could create a poster similar to this.

I have found these posters/images on google. I like the idea of having portraits on the poster (seeing as the film is about people, I need to to encorporate them into the poster). I have taken some good portrait photos I could use that I took when filming.

I saw this effect with photoshop on youtube. I really like it and might try it for my poster. Once I have created the title I will again ask my focus group what they think.

PRODUCTION: FILM SO FAR

Thursday 8th November

This is the short film at the moment, there is still a lot of work to be done. I need to include some more interviews, sort out the beginning (including the title some how). I am happy with the credits at the end (with the sunset going down at the same time), and the change of wing mirror from light to dark.

Tuesday 6 November 2012

PLANNING/PRODUCTION: FILM

I have laid out the footage so far and pointed to certain parts for planning purposes.
This is the stage I am at, at the moment. I still need to 1. Plan and record the voiceover
                                                                   2. Shoot more footage
                                                                                3. Enter credits onto the sunset
                                                                                4. Sort out the beginning scene
                                                                              5. Start the ancillary products

PRODUCTION: Feedback so far

I think it is really important to keep addressing my focus group throughout the process of my project. I aim to do this every now and again to get their honest feedback. I will contact them easily through Facebook.
I will then record and upload the results.
The Results;-

Monday 5 November 2012

PRODUCTION:THE ENDING

Since the beginning I planned to have a sunset which is fast forwarded at the ending showing the credits. I went and filmed a beautiful sunset which I then edited on imovie. It took 27 minutes to film. I have fast forwarded it and put it onto youtube.

However, this was far too long to have at the end of the film ( as the film is only allowed to be approximately five minutes) I think I will be using the end bit, so I will need to cut it down a significant amount.

Tuesday 16 October 2012

PRODUCTION: Draft One

Here is the beginning of the production. This is more of a planning resource and checking whether the music suits the type of documentary style short film.

PLANNING: TO DO LIST

New filmed footage.
Location: My house and down the road to the seafront

I have now imported my new footage, to be edited and put into the short film.

Planning: FILMING AND MUSIC

Filming for the short film:
Location:  Southend

All the twins I shall be using live in and around Southend therefore my filming will take place in Southend. I aim to set up a few shoots so I can have different backgrounds throughout the film, this will make it more interesting. I need to consider mise en scène, including setting, props, costume, makeup, lighting and figure/performance whilst filming.

LOCATION SHOTS:
Bishopsteighton (walking shots)

Thorpe Bay Seafront
The Local Park

Music:
Music is a common technique used in short films. The music almost always relates in some way to how the film is being portrayed. I would say it is one of the most important parts choosing what music suits your film, as this is one of the first things that the audience shall hear, giving them their first impressions of the film. Not only this, but a catchy song that might stick in their head might also leave them with a positive memory of my film.

Having watched this short film, (although it has nothing to with my type of genre of film) it is very useful to how they have considered the pace, editing and use of music. The music and pace is very fast therefore they have used so many different shots in a short time of space.

POSSIBLE CHOICES-

Having listened to this a few times, it is really catchy. It could be suitable for my short film.

THE XX- HEART SKIPPED A BEAT.

THE NAKED AND FAMOUS- YOUNG BLOOD

Listening to the beginning and the ending of this song, I think this may be the one. The Beginning of the song would be perfect for the panning shots I am thinking of having.

I aim to have a well-recorded voiceover and sound effects (if necessary). This soundtrack will create the mood and controls the changes of mood and pace throughout. The camera angles I aim to have backed by the soundtrack will use a fair range of well-framed shot distances and angles. Camera only unsteady where needed for narrative purposes. This is will be controlled and effective.

Planning: 25 WORD TREATMENT

Below is a 25 word treatment, these words are the issues associated with my short film. This treatment will help channel my thoughts. I have used some of my images I took when filming, I decided to also put them in black and white. I think this theme with run throughout my pieces.

Production: TEASER TRAILER

A Teaser Trailer

Here is a trailer I created on imovie. I have used some of the footage I am planning to use for my Short film. It really isn't the project that I wanted to do, I filmed my footage with the view to creating a short film. This template would be beneficial with regards to the timing, however I have chosen not to create a trailer. Having watched other trailers, I realise the amount of different shots you need, I want my short film to be creative and look good so I want to film more and have this different variety of shots. I am viewing this imovie piece as a teaser for my short film. Below is a list of things I need to do and edit so far.

PLANNING: Focus Group

My Focus Group

I have specifically chosen my focus group, as I want to make sure it appeals and interests people who aren't a twin. I have chosen 3 of my peers ( two who don't study media and one who does) and a media student in the year below. I will be asking my focus group throughout the whole process different questions, and showing them the process and edit anything that they think needs fixing. I will value their opinions and take them onboard.
